MP Govt declares ‘The Sabarmati Report’ film tax-free

Date:

The Madhya Pradesh Government announced on Tuesday that it would declare The Sabarmati Report, a film about the 2002 Godhra train burning incident, tax-free in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav made the announcement, expressing his support for the film and stating that he would personally watch it. “It is a very good movie. I will go to watch it myself. I also told my ministers, MLAs, and MPs to watch this film,” Yadav said, emphasizing the importance of making the film accessible to as many people as possible.

The film, directed by Dheeraj Sarna, focuses on the 2002 Godhra train burning, an event that sparked violent communal riots in Gujarat. Yadav described the incident as a dark chapter in India’s history and stated that the truth about the events would be revealed through the film. He also accused the Opposition of using the Godhra incident for “dirty politics” and vote-bank manipulation, while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role in preserving the dignity of Gujarat and the nation during the aftermath.

Prime Minister Modi, who was Gujarat’s Chief Minister at the time of the incident, also weighed in on the film, referring to it in a post on X. Modi commented that fake narratives could only persist for so long, referencing the film’s effort to bring out the truth about the incident.

MP Cabinet Minister Vishvas Sarang echoed similar sentiments, stating that the film had exposed the truth behind the Godhra incident, in which 59 people were killed. Sarang claimed that the Congress and Opposition parties had propagated a false narrative to defame Gujarat globally during that period, a narrative that the film seeks to correct.
