India successfully evacuated 75 of its nationals from Syria on Tuesday, following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime two days earlier. The evacuation, carried out by the Indian government, was prompted by the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Syria after the collapse of Assad’s authoritarian government.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the safe evacuation of the Indian citizens, stating that they had crossed over to neighboring Lebanon and would soon return to India via commercial flights. The evacuees included 44 zaireen from Jammu and Kashmir who had been stranded in Saida Zainab, a religious site in Damascus, due to the escalating violence in Syria.
In an official statement, the MEA reassured that all Indian nationals involved in the evacuation were safe and would be returning home shortly. “All Indian nationals have safely crossed over to Lebanon and will return by available commercial flights to India,” the Ministry said.
The rapid collapse of the Assad regime, followed by intense fighting between rebel forces and government loyalists, has significantly destabilized Syria. With the security situation becoming increasingly dire, the Indian government acted swiftly to ensure the safety of its citizens. The evacuation operation reflects India’s commitment to protecting its nationals abroad, particularly in regions experiencing political upheaval and armed conflict.
The Indian government continues to monitor the situation in Syria and remains in close touch with its diplomatic mission in Lebanon to facilitate the safe return of the evacuees. Efforts are also being made to ensure that any other Indian nationals still in Syria are safely evacuated as soon as possible.
