Delhi-NCR Rains: Status of School and Office Closures in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Beyond
New Delhi: The National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed incessant rainfall on Monday, leading to severe waterlogging across several areas and disruption of daily life. With rivers such as the Yamuna swelling due to continuous downpours, authorities in multiple states have issued safety directives, including school closures and advisories for offices.
On Monday evening, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini chaired a video conference with deputy commissioners to review the rain and flood situation. Following this, precautionary measures were announced in several districts, particularly Gurugram, which recorded over 100 mm of rainfall between 3 pm and 7 pm.
Gurugram:
The district administration has ordered the closure of all schools for Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Classes will instead be conducted online. Offices and private institutions in Gurugram have been advised to implement work-from-home arrangements to avoid commuting risks. The advisory came alongside an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the day.
Delhi:
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for the capital. While Delhi experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday, no official holiday for schools has been announced as of now. Authorities, however, indicated that a decision could follow if the rain persists and conditions worsen.
Noida and Greater Noida:
Schools in Noida and Greater Noida will remain open and function as per their regular schedule on Tuesday. Officials clarified that any change in status will be promptly updated if the situation demands.
Other States:
- Jammu Division: Schools will remain closed on September 2 due to adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
- Punjab: Authorities have ordered the closure of schools across the state until September 3.
- Uttarakhand (Chamoli district): All Anganwadi centers and schools from Classes 1 to 12 will remain shut on Tuesday.
- West Bengal (coastal districts): Heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for South and North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly until Tuesday morning.
With the monsoon continuing to intensify, authorities across Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions have urged residents to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official advisories. The situation will remain under close watch, with further announcements expected depending on rainfall and river levels in the coming days.
