Ahead of the special sitting of Parliament’s Budget Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stressed that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act must be implemented on time to strengthen women’s participation in democracy.
Addressing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’ in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said, “Our effort and priority is that this work should be accomplished through dialogue, cooperation and participation, which will enhance the dignity of Parliament.”
Acknowledging growing enthusiasm among women across the country, he noted that many are actively expressing aspirations to enter State Assemblies and the Lok Sabha. He urged women to remain engaged in the process and interact with their Members of Parliament to share their expectations and perspectives.
Recalling the passage of the Act in the new Parliament building in 2023, Modi highlighted that it was adopted unanimously, with a broad consensus for its implementation by 2029. He also encouraged women to take discussions around the legislation to every village through personal outreach and social media engagement.
Tracing the contribution of women from the freedom struggle to the Constituent Assembly, the Prime Minister underlined the role of “Nari Shakti” in shaping independent India. “From President to Prime Minister, wherever women have been, they have created their own legacy,” he said.
Highlighting grassroots governance, Modi described Panchayati Raj Institutions as a strong example of women’s leadership. He noted that over 14 lakh women are currently serving in local bodies, with their representation reaching nearly 50% in around 21 states.
“This active participation of lakhs of women in politics and social life surprises even global leaders and political experts, enhancing India’s pride,” he added.
Emphasising that women serving in local institutions have gained substantial governance experience over the years, the Prime Minister said they are now prepared and eager to take on larger roles at the state and national levels.
