Jharkhand Treasury Scam: IAS Committee to probe

Date:

Alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand treasury system, involving reported illegal withdrawals worth several crores linked to Superintendent of Police (SP) offices in Bokaro and Hazaribagh, have triggered a major administrative response, with the state government ordering a high-level probe.

The Finance Department has decided to constitute a committee led by a senior IAS officer to conduct a comprehensive investigation. A senior official from the Accountant General’s office will also be part of the panel to ensure technical scrutiny of financial records. Officials said the move reflects the seriousness of the alleged financial irregularities.

Preliminary findings indicate that the discrepancies may be linked to salary disbursements and treasury transactions involving police personnel over the past few years. Early scrutiny has flagged possible lapses in documentation, fund processing, and verification systems, raising concerns about wrongful payments.

The committee has been given full authority to examine treasury records, banking transactions, and related documents. It will also assess whether procedural norms were violated or if the case points to deeper systemic failures in financial administration.

Sources said the government may consider handing over the probe to agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation or the state Vigilance Bureau, depending on the findings of the initial inquiry.

Meanwhile, scrutiny of records at the Ranchi treasury has begun, focusing on salary payments and transaction data from the past three years. Investigators are examining possible red flags, including unusual spikes in payments, duplicate entries, and withdrawals made without proper approvals.

Officials indicated that the probe will also attempt to identify whether the issue stems from administrative lapses, technical loopholes, or a possible organised network involving fraudulent transactions such as ghost employees or inflated salary claims.

The development has sparked political reactions, with the Opposition demanding accountability and alleging systemic corruption. The government has assured that the investigation will be fair and fact-based, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
