Nitish Kumar Likely to Step Down Today; BJP Set to Lead Bihar for First Time

Date:

Patna | April 14, 2026
In a major political development, Nitish Kumar is likely to resign as the Chief Minister of Bihar today, marking a significant shift in the State’s political landscape.

Earlier in the day, Kumar chaired what is being seen as his final Cabinet meeting, where he informed ministers of his decision to dissolve the Council of Ministers — a constitutional step required before submitting his resignation.

Kumar, who has served as Chief Minister for over two decades across multiple terms, is expected to address meetings of the party legislature as well as the NDA legislature later today. During these meetings, the name of the next Chief Minister is likely to be finalised.

Sources indicate that several leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party are being considered for the top post. If confirmed, this would mark the first time the BJP assumes direct leadership of the Bihar government.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister, scheduled to take place on April 15 at Lok Bhawan.

The development signals a major transition within the NDA alliance in Bihar and could have wider implications for national politics ahead of upcoming elections.
