Asking if the ruling party would now unleash its thugs on judges “who had exposed its treachery,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal on Tuesday of snatching the rights of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and giving them away for “appeasement politics and vote jihad.”
Ahead of the last round of voting in nine state parliamentary segments on June 1, the prime minister was giving speeches in Barasat and Baruipur, Bengal. He was referring to the recent ruling by the Calcutta High Court that declared OBC certificates awarded to approximately 77 communities—the bulk of which were Muslim—to be invalid. According to him, the TMC “was fighting for existence” and the BJP will win the most seats in the upcoming Bengali elections.
Of the 42 parliamentary seats in the state, 18 were won by the BJP in 2019. 22 seats went to the TMC and two to the Congress.
In a subdued jab at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Barasat, Modi chastised her for doubting the HC order, saying,
The Trinamool’s betrayal of the OBCs has been revealed by the court. The party stole OBC youths’ rights in order to further its policies of appeasement and vote jihad.
“We will not accept the court order” comments made by Mamata were also questioned by the PM, who added, “It is quite clear that the TMC doesn’t like those who expose its treachery and deceit.” The way the GOP is attacking the judges astounds me. Do they not trust the Constitution and the judiciary? It is unusual how they are targeting judges. I wonder if the TMC would now unleash its thugs on judges while they are left vulnerable. The entire nation is seeing the TMC’s strangling of West Bengal’s judiciary.
