When Ontario police pursued a liquor shop robbery suspect who was going the wrong way, four people were instantly murdered in a multi-vehicle collision, including an Indian couple visiting Canada and their three-month-old grandchild.
Police confirmed on Thursday that all four of the victims had been declared dead at the scene on Highway 401 in Whitby, which is located around 50 kilometres east of Toronto.
According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), two of the victims, a woman, aged 55, and a male, aged 60, were on a visit from India. The victims’ names were kept a secret by the SIU, though.
In the collision of multiple vehicles, the couple’s three-month-old grandson also lost his life. Following the event on Monday, Highway 401 was closed for a few hours, according to the report.
According to officials, a liquor shop robbery in Bowmanville set off the tragic automobile chase, which came to a conclusion about 20 minutes later when the suspect in a cargo van drove Durham police at a high rate of speed down Highway 401, chasing other vehicles.
In addition, a 38-year-old male cargo van passenger was transported to the hospital for major medical attention.
On Wednesday, the victims’ autopsies took place in Toronto.
According to the statement, this situation is still being looked into by seven investigators, one forensic investigator, and one collision reconstructionist.
When there are police involvement in a death, significant injury, or claims of sexual assault, the SIU is the organisation that is brought in to conduct an investigation.
