INDIA bloc MPs hold protest in Parliament over Adani issue, demand JPC

Date:

Leaders of several INDIA bloc parties staged a protest on Parliament premises on Wednesday, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into allegations against the Adani Group following its indictment by U.S. prosecutors on bribery and fraud charges.

Members of Congress, AAP, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), DMK, and Left parties gathered at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, holding banners that read “Modi-Adani are one” and raising slogans. However, the TMC refrained from joining the protest.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi did not participate in the demonstration, as he was en route to violence-hit Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh with a Congress delegation.

The protest comes despite an advisory issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Tuesday, cautioning MPs against holding demonstrations at Parliament gates, citing potential risks to safety and security. Opposition MPs had also protested at the same location on Tuesday.

The Congress and other opposition parties have been persistent in their call for a JPC investigation, arguing that the indictment of Adani Group Chairperson Gautam Adani and his associates by U.S. authorities validates their concerns about alleged corruption and irregularities within the conglomerate. Congress has described the charges as evidence of “scams” tied to the industrialist and reiterated that the matter requires parliamentary scrutiny.

The controversy adds to growing tensions in Parliament, with the INDIA bloc leveraging the Adani case to criticize the Modi government. The demand for a JPC probe reflects the opposition’s effort to maintain pressure on the ruling BJP over corporate accountability and alleged crony capitalism.
