Former Punjab-cadre IPS officer and retired Inspector General Amar Singh Chahal allegedly died by suicide after being duped of ₹8.10 crore in a major cyber fraud, police sources said on Monday.
Official sources told Kashmir News Corner (KNC) that Chahal was trapped in a sophisticated online scam in which fraudsters, posing as representatives of an investment platform, added him to a WhatsApp group and promised high returns. Over more than two months, he allegedly transferred large sums of money, eventually losing over ₹8 crore.
Sources said nearly ₹7.5 crore of the amount had reportedly been borrowed from friends and relatives, compounding the retired officer’s financial and emotional distress.
A suicide note recovered from the scene was reportedly addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Union Finance Minister. In the note, Chahal sought justice and requested a multi-agency probe to identify the cyber criminals, recover the money and dismantle similar fraud networks. He also appealed for protection and support for his family.
The note reportedly stated that Chahal felt unable to face society after the massive financial loss and urged authorities to take strict action against cyber scam syndicates operating under the guise of legitimate financial platforms.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation. Cybercrime agencies are also expected to examine the fraud angle highlighted in the suicide note.
